In my last post, I wrote that I couldn’t agree more with Rosengren on his comments about Djokovic tanking in Marseille. My Swedish friend told me about some of the other topics that Rosengren have written about in his very interesting blog with a lot of insight from the tour. What stuck in my mind was that he had criticized Michael Ryderstedt for trying to qualify into the ATP event in Marseille. I have a great deal of respect for Rosengren as a coach, but I think he’s completely wrong here. I used to travel around to quite a few Challenger events and in my opinion; Michael Ryderstedt is a player with a very good and well planned tournament schedule.
The 23-year old Swede is mostly playing Challengers, followed by Futures and once in a while gives it a try on the ATP level. Sure, he apparently played a national event in Sweden just a week before going to Marseille. Normally, he is way too good for that level but felt that he needed to win a few matches. It is not often that Ryderstedt gives it a try on the ATP level. If he would be doing it week in and week out, I would be the first one to agree with Rosengren’s reasoning. However, the facts are very different. Last year, Ryderstedt didn’t take part in the qualifying of any ATP events (excluding Grand Slam qualies) and so far this year, he has played two events (Chennai and Marseille). Nobody can claim that this is too much for a player ranked in the 200’s.
Call it a gamble if you will, but these kind of gambles result in a very big payday once in a while. Just take a look at Santiago Ventura. He was an ordinary player on the Futures level when he came through the qualies and then went on to win Casablanca ATP 2004. According to Rosengren’s philosophy, he shouldn’t even have taken part in that tournament. Imagine how much the Spanish grinder from Castellon would have missed out on with that kind of approach…
More over, Ryderstedt has already reached a semifinal on the ATP level. His top level is very high and if he can play some of his best tennis in several successive matches anything is possible. That’s why I think it’s a wise decision of Ryderstedt to take part in an ATP event once every quarter or so.
