I'm in Marseille as the European indoor season gets under way. For all of you Swedish readers who have only been to the indoor tournament in Stockholm, I can tell you that you should be very proud of that tournament. The Stockholm ATP is one of the few indoor tournaments run smoothly and in a nice venue with a terrific atmosphere. At a tournament such as the one here, you really have to wonder if anyone with any kind of organizational mind is in the tournament committee. As with all the other French indoor tournaments, the venue is very uninspiring. It is dark, extremely warm and there is no genuine tennis atmosphere what so ever in “Palais des Sports”. It is a complete mad house in the stands. Popcorn is being thrown around everywhere, school kids are running and screaming like they’ve never had the chance before and you wonder if there is any adult person anywhere who is actually there with them.
If you feel like watching the match on Court 1, you have to leave the stadium, walk outside for approximately 300 meters, and then search for a while until you find the magic door which is opened every two games to let new spectators inside. If you don’t end up with a headache in this environment after five hours, then you will probably never get a headache because of external conditions.
