26-year old Nikolay Davydenko has possibly got five more years as a professional player. Whenever he decides to retire, that doesn't have to be the end of the Davydenko era. During the past two years, I have noticed a boy in his low teens in the Davydenko camp at most of the tournaments around the world. At first, I had no clue who he was, but having seen him on the practice courts, I guessed that he was Edouard Davydenko's new pupil. Now I know. His name is Philip Davydenko, and he was born 11 years after Nikolay and twice as long after Edouard. He is the son of Nikolay's older brother and coach Edouard.
Philip is in a very different situation to that Nikolay was in at the age of 15. “Kolya” had financial difficulties but fought his way through the lower levels with a tournament schedule as tough as ever seen. Philip, on the other hand, has already experienced the ATP star life style and is not playing any junior events. He has played a few professional events without any success, but is putting in very hard work on the practice courts. Contrary to his uncle Nikolay, Philip has a one handed backhand and seems to be a player eager to hit winners. He looks inconsistent as of now, but under the very strict tutelage of his father, he could very well develop into another striking ball machine with the surname Davydenko.
