Paul Haarhuis was never ranked better than No. 18 in singles during his professional career. However, the Dutchman has won the Blackrock Masters during the past three years, beating players who experienced a lot more success during their prime. I was in London visiting a friend last week and had the opportunity to watch some of the matches in the Royal Albert Hall. More than anything, I was amazed to see how fit Haarhuis is eight years after he played his last singles match on the ATP Tour. The 41-year old from Eindhoven easily dispatched Michael Stich, John McEnroe and Sergi Bruguera before beating Guy Forget after a match tiebreak in the final. Notably, Haarhuis’ professional record against Stich was 0-6, but things have changed in many ways since those days.
Whereas some of the former stars haven’t cared about staying in shape, Haarhuis looks like he has spent the last year in a training camp. It would be very interesting to see a challenge between Haarhuis and a player ranked around 150 on the ATP singles rankings today. I’m not completely sure that the 150-ranked player would win. More over, Haarhuis would most likely still be a force in doubles, where he was on top of the world 13 years ago. Professional tennis has gone through many changes since 1974, when Ken Rosewall reached the final of Wimbledon at an age of 40. But even in the year 2007, guys at an age of 40 and over can produce very competitive tennis.
