  • The Davis Cup trophy is back in the US - but for how long

    2007-12-03 09:50:00

The big tennis news this weekend is obviously that the Americans are back as Davis Cup champions. One major reason for the success is that the team has been identical during the past eight ties, ever since the playoff match against Belgium in September 2005. The Americans were really under the radar there as Andy Roddick gutted out a five set win against Olivier Rochus to seal the win on the last day. Since then, Patrick McEnroe has managed to get the same group of four players to play in every tie.

A lot of things could have stopped them. More than anything, a tough away match on clay or an injury to anyone in the quartet would almost certainly have put an end to their Davis Cup dream. As good as this American team is on paper, it is also extremely vulnerable. This year, a combination of the right draw and a very strong dedication of the players gave them the victory. Andy Roddick has constantly been mentioning this as one of his four main career goals, and I've never seen him as pumped up as he was against Dmitry Tursunov two days ago.

It will be very interesting to see how the Americans react to this win in 2008. Will they find the motivation to try and win the cup another time? It's definitely going to be a lot more difficult next year. If they get past Austria away (most definitely on a slow clay court), they will go on to play France at home. In a possible semifinal, the likely opponents are either Germany or Spain away. An away match against Spain on clay is the kind of match that the Americans need to stay away from in order to win the Davis Cup. The Russians, on the other hand, don't need to worry as much about the draw. They are currently the best overall Davis Cup team in the world with four singles player in the Top 35 and the opportunity to have a world class team on any surface.
