For those of you who are following the lower levels of professional tennis, Joseph Sirianni is a name you’ve probably seen many times. At an age of 32 years, he is one of the guys who never gives up and keeps on trying to improve his game. His year-end ranking has been very consistent. Since 1997, he has finished two years in the 200's, five years in the 300's and three years in the 400's. But this is not the reason why I’m writing about Sirianni.
The Australian is one of the most in-form players right now, having just won back-to-back titles on the Challenger circuit. After a year without too many highlights, these two wins have propelled his ranking more than 100 spots and almost doubled his points total. The three most impressive wins have been against three higher ranked countrymen, Australian #3 Chris Guccione, #4 Alun Jones and #5 Robert Smeets. When the rankings are updated tomorrow, he will be very close to his career-high ranking of 199 (21 July 2003). Will he be able to make his move towards the top 100 next year? It is not very likely, but never underestimate the will and experience of a 32-year old journeyman who has traveled the world of professional tennis for more than a decade.
