With the ATP season having come to an end, all eyes are on the Challengers this week. One of the hottest players right now is definitely Jesse Levine. The left-hander, who was born in Canada and moved to Florida at an age of 13, turned 20 last month and is on an incredible roll. With the win in the second round of Knoxville Challenger last night, he has now piled up 13 straight wins. This includes wins against Robert Kendrick, Kevin Kim, John Isner and Donald Young.
Levine has made some unusual decisions in his short tennis career. After reaching a quarterfinal on the Challenger level last fall, almost everyone expected him to go pro and leave out college. Levine had other plans and enrolled at the University of Florida. Just a few weeks into the college season, something very extraordinary happened. Levine got a Wild Card to the qualifying draw at the ATP event in Delray Beach, and won four matches before falling to Benjamin Becker in his second round robin match. It is very rare that a current college player wins a main draw ATP match. The next week, he was back in school and ready to dominate the college tennis scene. He won 24 straight matches before losing the last match of the season in the quarterfinals of the Nationals (to Alex Slovic, Univ. of Washington). After one semester at college, Levine dropped out to turn pro. During the last month, he has taken his ranking from the mid 400’s to within the Top 200, and there is nothing indicating stagnation now.
