This time I’m writing you from Spain, where I’m currently on vacation. I must admit that with the Masters Cup underway, I have spent a number of hours in my hotel bed in front of the TV. I had planned on leaving the hotel early this morning to do some sightseeing, but couldn’t resist the highly touted match between Spain’s top two players, Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer. The match proved to be a great fight between two very entertaining players and some of those grueling rallies even made me grasp, although not quite like the crowd in Shanghai. Anyway, I finally left to do the planned sightseeing.
Before going out for dinner, I went back to the hotel to get a sweater. This is when I accidentally turned on the TV and was surprised to see some more live tennis going on. It wasn’t just anyone playing; it was my all time favorite Stefan Edberg. The Spanish sports channel Teledeporte sure knows how to please tennis fans. The match was between Edberg and Henri Leconte and part of the “Legends Live” tournament set in Fredriksberg in Denmark. Edberg was very nice to his opponent in the first set, but put on the accelerator in the second set and finished off by winning the match tiebreak. I was excited to see some of Edberg’s classic footwork and the super volleys. To be reminded of his fluent way of moving around the court, check out this clip at 09:03.
Everything was obviously at a much slower pace today, but Edberg proved that he is still able to play at a very high level. It will be interesting to see how he fares against Tim Henman, when they take on each other in London on 4 December. By the way, instead of going out I ended up ordering room service. Edberg on the menu was definitely too much to withstand.
