When last week's combined ATP/WTA event Kremlin Cup was completed on Sunday, three out of four winners were from the home nation. This was not a coincidence. The Russians have become used to incredible success on the tennis courts, and especially at home. What impresses me the most is the depth of players they have. The Russian invasion of the WTA Tour has been described many times before (currently four players in the top 10, seven in the top 20 and a total of 15 players in the Top 100). But they have an amazing group of players on the men's side as well, with five players in the top 40.
This group of players won the Davis Cup trophy last year, and will take on USA in the final this year. Whereas most other teams are very vulnerable to surface choices at away matches, the Russians have a strong squad on any kind of surface.
The women have obviously dominated the Fed Cup the last couple of years, and have been crowned champions three out of the past four years. A lot of this success has been achieved in Russia. Within a year,
Moscow has been the host city of both a Davis Cup and Fed Cup final, both having been won by the Russians. After collecting the Hopman Cup trophy in January, Dmitry Tursunov was jokingly saying "that there are probably no more cups for us to win now." In 2007, they have the chance of becoming the first nation to win the Fed Cup and Davis Cup in the same year since USA in 1990.
So last week's wins of Davydenko, Dementieva and Safin/Tursunov was just another good week of tennis in the Russian capital – with even more and more kids turning their eyes to the sport of their heroes, with a strong will to work hard.
