  • ATP cheers and jeers in 2008 Part 2

    2009-01-01 20:23:32
Today, the tennis world waits to hear the announcement of a replacement for outgoing albatross, Etienne deVilliers. If find yourself in a situation similar to mine, you are nursing a nasty, post-New Year's Eve hangover and wondering why the promise of "just one more glass of champange," cannot be kept.

As the 2009 season begins and brings with it the promise of another action-packed year on the ATP tour, let us look back on a few of the memorable moments in 2008.

    July: Borg picks his pony

Björn Borg winning Wimbledon Out of a group of 15 former Wimbledon Champions, Swedish uber star and cultural icon, Björn Borg led the charge and predicted a final Sunday win for Rafael Nadal in London.

Past champions including Jack Kramer, Rod Laver, Tony Trabert, John McEnroe, Stefan Edberg, Michael Stich, Goran Ivanisevic and Pete Sampras were certain Roger Federer would collect his sixth Wimbledon title.

August: Tanner slips out of a trip to the pokey

Roscoe Tanner Grand theft auto charges were dropped against former ATP tour pro, Roscoe Tanner in August. The former tennis star had penned two rubber checks to car dealership in Tennessee, after purchasing a couple of new sports utility vehicles.

According to officials at the Knox County Court, Tanner coughed up more than $5000 owed to the Toyota dealer in Knoxville.

Tanner, no stranger to scuffles with law enforcement, has previously faced jail time for failing to pay child support and loan defaults.

    September: Murray makes it!

British tennis player Andy Murray Hot Scot Andy Murray continued his meteoric rise in 2008, reaching his first Grand Slam final match at the USO. A slightly fatigued Murray ran into a determined Roger Federer in the finals, but the Dunblane darling's sweetheart run captured worldwide attention.

    October: Sex sells in Madrid

Madrid ball girls Hard to tell who had the more difficult time concentrating on the tennis in Madrid during the Masters Series event- the crowd or the players. The beautiful ball girls did their sexiest best to appeal to the voyeur in all of us, providing everyone with some t & a inspired spice.

November: Jimmy gets jacked, carted off by cops

Jimmy Connors Former ATP tour players were determined to reacquaint themselves with the police in 2008.

In November, eight-time Grand Slam champ and A-list coach, Jimmy Connors was arrested, taken into custody and booked in California, having refused to exit the grounds of the UC Santa Barbara college campus.

Terminal bad boy Connors had been watching a basketball game between UC Santa Barbara and top-ranked North Carolina.

    December: Power-couple "Gragassi," grifters?

Steffi Graf and Andre Agassi Sports agent and recently unemployed de Villiers' apologist, Perry Rogers, dragged Mrs. Agassi into court in December. Rogers filled a lawsuit asking for more than $50,000 in default commissions.

Rogers, a childhood pal of Andre's, who represented both Mr. And Mrs. for years, insisted he was responsible for helping Steffi increase her net worth upwards of 20 million.

Right well disrespectful of Rafa if you ask me. Quite understandable to call Federer a co contender, but so many of the past champs overlook him. I don't think Johnny Mac has seen much daylight, what with his head lodged up Federer's hoohah for eons.

I wouldn't lock a person up Michelle, but he hasn't aged well, that's for sure. Jimmy has always been a hothead, and I'm not surprised the situation escalated. It didn't amount to anything, but he's got that personality that can rub people the wrong way. Mistake he made was mouthing off to the cops, not a linesperson. There is a real difference between the two.

Good on Borg for not throwing Rafa under a bus. RQ, I think perhaps the other past champs always want Federer to win because he plays the ultimate "classic" game. It's elitist snobbery if you ask me. Federer plays tennis the way it was "intended" to be played. nadal sort of...bullies the ball and his opponents around the court. The old legends don't want Rafa's game to be as effective as it is.

Nothing from Federer, of course. His game is the most aesthetically appealing perhaps in history. But it promotes a kind of elitism from purist fans that isn't good for the sport in my opinion.

Cheers and many happy returns to you Cheryl. May 2009 be kind to you and yours. I was told to wait on an answer from your end.

I am driven half barmy by all of this Federer worship. Okay he is a lusciously gifted guy, point taken. Why all the gold words are saved for only one person, leaving Rafa out of it is out of my reach.

Lot of kudos and handshakes for the response. I must do a string of rolling eyes in honour of the purists. The are well free to stick it where the sun don't shine. :D

Cheryl, Love the way you show Murray's picture for September rather than Fed's! I have to say, though, that I think the world of Fed's game, and have to admit (grudgingly) that, when he's on song, he's still the best to watch. That said, I get the feeling Fed is NOT going to break Sampras' grand slam record. He's now past his peak of consistency and has never at any point had the stiffness of competition he now has at the very top - apart from Rafa, Murray's already beating him regularly and, of the top four, Fed's the least likely to see further improvement.

alex , 1/3/09 1:54 AM

Cheryl, I see you're actually Kelli :)
