I am one of a rare breed of people who actually loves my job. I really do. I LOVE men’s tennis. I watch it even when I don’t have to. I follow all the comings and goings of the sport and would do so even if my job didn’t depend on it. I tell you this because when I say the following, I want you to understand that I do it out of love and not because I just enjoy complaining.
The ATP needs to re-think its marketing strategy. And I’m not talking about releasing yet another campaign depicting the top players hitting tennis balls in space, or on horseback or under the ocean or whatever other foolishness they might think up next.
I’m talking about a whole new mindset when it comes to selling men’s tennis. The ATP has become so bogged down in its own rules that it is nearly maimed itself. Most of you have probably seen the Federer and Nadal giggling spot that ended up on YouTube. Some of you haven’t – but it’s not for lack of trying.
Why can’t you see it? Because the videos have been removed no less than 3 times (and probably more). That clip is so completely charming, it’s so quintessentially what the top of men’s tennis is about right now. Those two guys, fierce rivals on court are falling all over each other giggling and gasping for breath and just generally…well…playing with each other.
People, this is a marketing GOLDMINE! And what is the ATP doing? Are they putting the video that the entire world is in love with on their website? No. They’re issuing threats about rights infringement and YANKING the clip out of circulation.
Now this may sound harsh, but WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE? If I didn’t know for certain that they really DO want the sport to succeed, I’d think they were out to sabotage it.
The WTA is light years ahead of the ATP in this sense. They have come to the understanding that their players and not the tradition of the sport itself are the key to fiscal and popular success.
The ATP, on the other hand, seems loathe to admit that people come out in droves, not necessarily because they love the integrity and purity of the sport, but because they want to see Roger Federer, or watch Rafael Nadal change his shirt.
It’s long past time for the ATP to permit the sport to expand, even if it’s not the way they WANT it to expand. The health of the sport DEPENDS upon it.

i agree completely cheryl. i think it's back up on youtube at the moment, but probably not for long
Sib69 , 8/20/10 10:38 PM
Even if that last one finally DOES stay up (which it won't), it doesn't make the decision to try to "hide" it or whatever any less troublesome.
What POSSIBLE good could come of squelching something so harmless and that so many people loved?
cherylmurray , 8/20/10 10:43 PM
On the other hand they lapped up the Nadal/Shakira video, so there mst be more to it than meets the eye.
nadline , 8/20/10 10:45 PM
sure they did. But once ever 2 years for that type of thing simply isn't enough.
Also, that wasn't impromptu nor "organic". and as such it fell within the confines of traditional marketing.
cherylmurray , 8/20/10 10:50 PM
I hope whoever is responsible at the ATP for the stupid decision to squash that video gets the sack. I guess they were peeved at the prospect of so much 'free' publicity for a non-ATP event.
Talk about shooting yourself in the foot!
ed251137 , 8/21/10 1:23 AM
u want to know how to sort out the ATP?
get rid of the americans in that organisation.
put some australians and chinese in there and u will get better marketing.
look how many small tournaments america hosts, sooooo many 250's and 500's and 3 masters 1000 and a slam.
ridiculous.
give those tournaments to places in asia, like china or south korea.
attackingtennisrulez , 8/21/10 2:51 AM
no
RickyDimon , 8/21/10 3:09 AM
That is a great video--was able to catch it before it was yanked again--and it's too bad that the ATP apparently doesn't want it to be widely circulated. You'd think that the ATP would have its own Youtube channel for promotional videos and interviews.
Fanfan , 8/21/10 3:09 AM
yes
attackingtennisrulez , 8/21/10 3:26 AM
I completely agree. I have watched that video twice. These two guys are so funny and charming. There will be no better marketing for ATP or the exhibition than this video. Removing it from public access is a dumb and stupid mistake, but I do not expect too much from ATP anyway!
zola , 8/21/10 7:54 AM
i saw the clip and Rafa's so adorable when he laughs :)
happytonight , 8/21/10 5:34 PM
anybody got link for this video, now im really intrested in seeing that
farhang1983 , 8/21/10 6:07 PM
It's too bad the ATP have the power to pull the plug on this video. It is (sorry was) a classic of its kind. I cant for the life of me understand why they they are bothered by people watching two guys cracking up for 20 minutes.
ed251137 , 8/22/10 1:20 AM
I liked the video. It was enjoyable to see two superstars just being human, for a moment in time suspending the rivalry. Very entertaining... No doubt Roger, and Rafa can, and may be even be friends.
sky , 8/22/10 3:02 AM
I'm getting really upset now, this is the 3rd post that talks about this clip and it's not available anywhere! I don't actually know where it's set, but YouTube keeps saying the England and Wales Cricket Board is posting copyright claims on it - which requires some explanation.... Can anyone suggest keywords so I can look on YouTube and hope to catch it between copyright claims?

Thanks, smr,I finally got to see the video!
vij , 8/22/10 4:22 AM
I was on a Rafa fan forum and they found a French site that has the link embedded. Try this and see if it works.

Nativenewyorker , 8/22/10 5:15 AM
US commentator Mary Carillo talked about the clip during the final today. She called it "delightful" and then said, "if you can find it, you should watch it."
Sigh.
ARE YOU LISTENING ATP????
cherylmurray , 8/23/10 3:06 AM
NNY's link is still working, but if you copy and paste make sure you remove the space at Nadal-_morts-de-rire.
ed251137 , 8/23/10 10:44 AM
Right on, Cheryl! That vid is the best tennis ad I've ever seen and certainly better than any finished product they'll come up with. Why oh why do they want it suppressed?
Ramara , 8/23/10 1:57 PM
the 20min.ch website no longer has it either
does anyone have yet another link?
I would love to see the video but got there too late each time so far
chlorostoma , 8/23/10 3:42 PM
Boy they dareetermined to keep people from seeing it. Somebody must be employed full time to make sure it gets pulled asap. As for the England & Wales Cricket Board claiming copyright, the mind boggles. Maybe Roger or Rafa have their own copy and will make it available.
ed251137 , 8/23/10 4:11 PM
http://img706.imageshack.us/i/federerandnadallaugh.mp4/
Try this,it's still working:)
Nusica , 8/23/10 11:09 PM
That is the best thing ever. I do not believe the ATP are behind the pulling, nobody in the world is that stupid. There is probably some brilliant conspiracy theory to be woven around that.
It finally worked on Nusica's link - thanks so much everyone - it was completely worth the nightmare trying to find it. (And now I have downloaded it so it is mine, hah!)
Wonder if they really are going to do an exhibition at Christmas?
parera , 8/24/10 1:01 AM
I think at last blush it had something like four million hits.
Or maybe I've confused that with Roger's Gillette trick shot video; Mary commented on that too.
"Wonder if they really are going to do an exhibition at Christmas?"
Will it be in Zurich if they do it? I was confused because it seemed that they were doing the last spot in Spanish, so I was wondering if the exho (should it happens) will really be in Spain.
mara002 , 8/24/10 4:19 AM
nusica,
thank you!
it seemed like a real exho in the planning... to be also televised in Spain.
Cheryl, you are right about what you wrote about the two of them. and about the ATP if they are the ones pulling this video.
To be like that together you either have to get along pretty well or be stoned. Which they weren't. I've rarely seen Roger this relaxed, but I guess he often is outside of interviews.
This video should be preserved for the future.
chlorostoma , 8/24/10 4:41 AM
:)
iv downloaded the video...saved it a dozen times at various places...cant loose it now...lol
vrael , 8/24/10 8:16 AM
Vrael, would you be able to email vid by any chance? or upload somewhere may be:-)
Nothing , 8/24/10 3:09 PM
I'm sure that the finished video will be out later on, they probably pulled it because it wasn't the finished product.
nadline , 8/24/10 3:43 PM
nadline: oh you poor thing, did you not manage to catch it? The finished product will be just be a plug for the match - not a patch on the elusive video when for 20 minutes neither of them could string two words together without collapsing in helpless giggles like two naughty schoolboys.
ed251137 , 8/24/10 4:22 PM
cholo - nope, not stoned. just completely at ease with each other. I SWEAR it's Rafa's eyebrow that makes Rog lose it the first time.
nusica - If I understand properly, the exhibition will take place in Zurich, but they will have advertisements running in Switzerland and Spain.
nadline - You're right, that surely wasn't the finished product. But it was so stinking charming and has garnered so much attention, it might as well have been the real thing. It's foolish for them not to use it. It's for charity, for pity's sake. They should take all the publicity they can get.
cherylmurray , 8/24/10 7:23 PM
yes, that's what I meant by "they weren't" (stoned). Clearly simply even that much more at ease with each other than expected ...
chlorostoma , 8/24/10 7:55 PM
@Nothing...a 45 mb vid cant be emailed with all the upload limits at mail sites...if i get any other link which works il post it here or il upload it myself on metacafe if there is no other means left
vrael , 8/25/10 1:00 AM
There's a shorter version (04.51) at http://www.ole.com.ar/tenis/Mira-Federer-Nadal-risa-Ascom_3_322797719. html.
calypso , 8/25/10 6:35 PM
Obviously these candid moments are far more fun and interesting than a finished promo. Thanks to whoever found the raw footage and posted it online in the first place. Then again, the posting and pulling out may all be part of some viral campaign to make people even more interested.
I get the feeling that as it get pulled out, it will continue to reappear.
And of course I agree with you, Cheryl that R&R are together the best ambassadors men's Tennis has ever had.
grafight , 8/26/10 5:41 PM
By the way, to find the clip, do any search you may think will work, such as "Federer Nadal spot" in Youtube, then in options choose "upload date", then "today". You will see half a dozen postings of the video or so which haven't been removed yet.
grafight , 8/26/10 5:48 PM
All of those even seem to be gone. Really, what's the point? Sigh.
cherylmurray , 8/26/10 10:04 PM
Here you go:
https://www.credit-suisse.com/global/rogerfederer/
smr , 8/28/10 2:42 PM
I think I figured out why it kept being pulled (but not before smr posted it). The clip on Credit Suisse's "Roger as global ambassador" site has both the final spot and the edited version.
They probably wanted creative control over the release (but then some smart marketing person who's also a tennis fan came here, read this, and then they at least posted an edited version of the outtakes, after pulling it repeatedly to generate interest of the "want what you can't have" variety).
mara002 , 8/29/10 1:57 AM
Here it is again, Cheryl & everyone, under "creditsuissevideos".
I'm guessing since they have a promotional contract with Roger, they wanted to have control of the rights.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsMhdAowzT0&feature=related
mara002 , 9/18/10 2:59 AM
Someone posted that tickets were sold out within minutes of going on sale.
I wonder if creditsuisse know what they were doing by making the YouTube pirated versions so sought after, or was it a lucky accident? The 15 minute version was far more infectious though.
