I’ve discovered an interesting phenomenon among even the most seasoned reporters, which is that tennis reporters are often, first and foremost, tennis fans. I bring this up because on Tuesday, I sat in “pre-tournament” press conferences with Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.
They were scheduled one right after another, which was basically how it transpired if you are willing to stipulate that Spanish time runs anywhere from an hour to 90 minutes late. Anyway, Federer’s was first. He was, as usual, on the sarcastic side. I chalk this up to his being forced to answer the same questions over and over and over again. Also because I think that's just how his humor runs.
In fact, he gave the answer of the day. Somebody asked him about whether he thought his form was dropping. This seemed to….irritate him a bit, and he pointed out that “people” (read – reporters) had been saying that for more than a year. And then out of nowhere, “I cried at the Australian Open in the final. And that was a big tragedy for everyone…” Someday, maybe I’ll explore why, precisely, he chose to bring this up unsolicited. But for the moment, we’ll just call it amusing and be done with it.
After his presser, several other reporters said they thought he sounded snippy and still others thought he was fantastically witty. One gentleman even brought up the post-loss-to-Berdych-at-Wimbledon presser. And it struck me yet again that the tennis community at large – even the professional one – has taken sides in the Nadal-Federer rivalry.
Rafa’s presser when if finally happened, was largely uneventful – as his pressers tend to be. He was charming and relaxed, just like Federer was and gifted his very delightful smile often. He even cracked a few jokes, the crown jewel of which was the answer he gave to how he’s feeling physically. “Physically I’m perfect……give me two weeks to broke everything.”
Unwisely as it turned out, I stayed in the press room talking with a colleague after Nadal was done. I was quite close to the front and looked up to see him climb down from the podium – and promptly get his foot stuck in the cord to the FastScripts machine. This is the device the nice lady from ASAP Sports uses to transcribe pressers. It looks…well…expensive.
I had sudden images of the machine (and Rafa) flying through the air. And with the sort of eloquence that could only be found in somebody who makes their living crafting words, I said (quite loudly) “Rafa. Foot.” And then “FOOT. FOOT. FOOT!” Not “Rafa, your foot is caught” or even “Rafa watch out”. The look I got was somewhere between “Lady, I speak English better than that” and “where’s security?”. Fortunately at the last minute, he realized what my sputtered sentence fragments meant and untangled his foot. Yes indeed. I’m smmoooooottttthhhhh.
One last thing about Tuesday - I actually saw a grown man wearing Rafa’s striped shirt-brown checked shorts combination. After a brief internal battle in which I imagined scenarios of threats and blackmail, I came to the unwelcome conclusion that this man probably *gulp* dressed that way on purpose. I would have taken a photograph, but I was just so stunned….

hahahahaha. cheryl, thanks for potentially saving rafa there. am sure many federer fans may think you should have just left him to trip over :P

cheryl, did I not tell you that Rafa's check shorts had sold out, that man is not the only wearing them, believe me.
nadline , 8/18/10 7:18 PM
Cheryl, you're my hero! You probably saved Rafa's life there... or at least some major embarrassment.
Don't feel bad about the loss for words. My wife is a writer and she was English Sterling Scholar for the U.S. Western Region, but when I'm driving and she thinks something bad is going to happen all she can come up with is primal noises, which I've learned to interpret as "watch out", "there's a car in your blind spot", "you missed your turn, you moron", and so forth.

Carrie - I just KNEW you would love that bit about the hideous outfit. :D
vij - great compliment. Thanks. :)
Sib - I'm fairly certain that I didn't save Rafa's life.....but the fastScripts lady was awfully thankful.
grafight - I think I would quite like your wife. :D

Thank you Cheryl, you're my hero! And I like your article too :)

It's easy to understand you became tongue-tied finding yourself so close to him! But I'm surprised he didn't give you one of those radiant smiles when he realised you had saved him from a catastrophe.
ed251137 , 8/18/10 10:39 PM
Well, it really wasn't the fact that it was Rafa that had me tongue-tied...it was more the impending disaster of the moment....
cherylmurray , 8/19/10 12:23 AM
Cheryl, the moral of this is that you should never get panic-stricken!Had you been calm, you could have milked the situation to the full.Instead of stuttering..Rafa,foot,foot....you could have rushed to his side and helped him disentangle his precious foot.Who knows, apart from rewarding you with his wonderful smile,he might have gifted you with a year's supply of the striped shirt-checked shorts combo! What a treat for the men in your family and what a treat for your eyes for a long time to come!

Thanks for my laughs of the day, Cheryl!! Glad you helped Rafa avoid disaster. Sorry for Fed, must be very trying indeed to feel like the subject of a death-watch. Must be a cartoon there somewhere - Rog crawling through a clay desert, surrounded by vultures clutching recorders and cameras?

vij - all of the ones that we used this morning have been pulled. The ATP makes such a mistake in not marketing this stuff better.
They should have put that directly on the ATP website. Everyone loves it and it is completely and totally charming. silly.

Cheryl,
What I like about your articles is that they are so balanced. You too might be a fan of one or the other but in your articles you do not take sides.
Yes,the FastScripts equipment might have been expensive but my prime concern is for Rafa's well being and thank you for preventing possible damage there.
