I’ve come to the conclusion that the United States has a decided lack of gentlemen. I’m not sure why that is, but I am now convinced of its being a national tragedy. On Thursday evening before the Federer match, I went out to dinner with a colleague who happened to be Swedish. We opted against tournament food and decided to walk along the Thames instead to find a restaurant. And guess what? He offered me his coat. Gallantry, dear readers, is not yet lost.
Now, you’re (if you’re a man) probably thinking “what sort of idiot walks along the Thames at night in November without a coat?” That’s beside the point (though admittedly valid). The point is that it was OFFERED (I turned it down though, because it wasn’t his fault that I’m dumb). Also another young man gave up his seat on the tube so I could sit down. This was much-appreciated, because on top of my other faults, I’m also terribly clumsy, and standing on the subway could result in any number of injuries to myself or fellow passengers.
I’m in London by myself, of course. But I didn’t let that stop me from going to theatre on Friday night. I went to see the brilliant Billy Elliot. I’m not ashamed to admit that a few tears leaked out on a couple (5) occasions. The highlight of the show is a hilarious number called “Merry Christmas Margaret Thatcher”, in which coal miners sing a…tribute to the then-British Prime Minister.
I’m back at the tournament today though, having just come from Federer’s press conference. I’ll save that amusing story for later tonight. Until then….

ok, i guess this is a no, no topic. i hope you have fun in miami.

There was a time when giving up your seat to a woman on London public transport was virtually compulsory. But no longer. Today it is either a compliment because you are young and beautiful or, in my case, you are so decrepit they feel obliged to.

Well, it's not my fault that Miami doesn't have theatre culture, Ricky. Maybe you could....go to the beach the next time you're there. :D
ed, sad isn't it? Also sad was how pleasantly surprised I was. The guy who offered (and I accepted, because I was wearing heels and probably would have broken an ankle) was probably no older than 22. Somebody clearly taught him how to be a gentleman.

Ricky: Miami makes up in sun what it lacks in culture. Besides you get paid to go and watch tennis - how lucky is that!

Glad you had a gr8 time cheryl. So did I!

Thanks Cheryl, there are gentlemen in the US.I guess it's just where you go to find them as in all countries:)
I'm glad you're having a wonderful time:) and keeping us informed.

tanks cheryl! :)
a colleague of mine from england was on the underground one day and saw a white guy get up, walk over to a black guy and beat the crap out of him - just because he didn't like the guy's skin colour. the bully's female companion even tried to stop him and couldn't. finally, a huge, burly guy from the back came forward, lifted the white bully and threw him back into his seat. the black guy ran out at the nextstop.
so next time no one offers you a seat, be tankful you at least get to walk out of the train skin intact :) sad, but that's the reality if you happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. i have more similar stories but will spare you.

goodness gracious, homos. That was very.....graphic. Indeed I can say that I'm glad to have made it through my week and a half with little more than a hard nudge in the shoulder because my hair accidentally brushed against someone (it's not like the tube wasn't completely jam packed with people or anything.....)
