There comes a time in every serious tennis journalist's career when she says to herself "What tennis REALLY needs is a singing competition." And what better time to have one? Tennis is having a... well... let's call it a quiet week, and Roger Federer (bless his heart) was kind enough to supply us with an inspiring performance just this weekend. So watch these videos, pay close attention to the judges' critiques (supplied by myself and my esteemed colleagues Kelli De Mario and Ricky Dimon) and DON'T FORGET TO VOTE! You can help put an end, once and for all, to the Rafa vs. Roger debate.
Up first, we have Rafael Nadal. Now, I realize that any Rafa fan worth her (or his) salt has already seen this video clip, but I must ask that you refrain from usual "SQUEEEEE! How stinking CUTE is he??!!??" and focus instead on the actual performance. You might have difficulty discerning which voice is Rafa's, but I can help with that. Richie Valens could actually sing, so any other…er….noises you might hear will be Rafa.
KDM: The World No. 2 is ready to cut a record, right now. Nadal sings, dances, looks great and is a lock to move merch faster than a Karlovic serve. What more could Sony ask for from an artist? He's tailor-made for two key demographics- the screaming/shrieking teeny bopper crowd, as well as the desperate housewife crowd, who probably couldn't care less if the piece of Mallorcan man-candy could croak out a single note.
RD: People, that was just hideous. Stage presence was mediocre at best and delivery was woeful. Although—let's be honest—the fact that the delivery was woeful is a good thing. The less I could hear of Rafa, the better. Because the parts I could hear of him were amazingly awful. And don't even get me started on the dancing. Rafa's entrance was actually pretty good, but all of his moves thereafter were borderline ridiculous. He should stick to the fist pumps; in fact, one or two of those would have added a nice, vintage touch to this otherwise abominable display.
CM: Well... I liked the pink shirt, and it looks as though he might have combed his hair sometime that week, so points for sprucing up his look. As for the dancing, I'm not sure it was a wise idea to let Big Bird choreograph his moves. He should have saved the Sesame Street Shuffle (OK kids, now jump and turn AT THE SAME TIME!) for his own special alone time. The singing could have been worse (see below), but that might have had more to do with the special assistance he got from Richie Valens. Placido Domingo won't be calling.
Next up, is Roger Federer. I don't even have a preamble for this except to say... wow. Just... wow.
KDM: As a long-standing member of the entertainment community, I'd have to give the edge in style, commitment and all-around ability to work the crowd to the reigning World No. 1. Federer demonstrated his trademark fearlessness in front of an audience, and he had them eating out of the palm of his hands.
RD: Let me start with the good news, folks, since that will be a lot faster. Originality was decent, delivery was top-notch, and stage presence was surprisingly impressive. It also got better as it progressed and Roger bounced back well from a dreadful (and painful) fourth note.
Then again, saying it got better as it progressed is NOT saying a lot. The singing was horrific; so bad that I might actually lose sleep over it. And the "see you soon, on the moon" ending was unspeakably bad. Fortunately for Roger, it was so bad it was funny. High marks for comedic performance. I have to say, though, his performance during the U.S. Open final in front of Jake Garner was better. Had more emotion. More feeling. Bottom line: Stick to tennis.
CM: Okay. So Eminem he is not. Actually, he's not even Weird Al but I will give him credit for singing something that was VERY clearly his own composition. The high point of the...er...performance was definitely "OOOH yeAHHH! I like it! Very, Very Much!" (great sense of rhyme and timing, don't you think?). The good news for Roger is that he performed with the real showman's lack of embarrassment, but let's call a spade a spade. He couldn't carry a tune if it came equipped with its own pack mule and Sherpa.
So there you have it folks. Who's it going to be? Rafa or Roger? Vote early and vote often.

LOL! Not desperate, just bored. Plus, that Federer video is too good to not write about. :D

Rafa of course!! he looks better even.
homos , 9/23/09 5:36 PM
CM , i was ROFL when he went "see you soon " ..."on the moon" ..haha ...that was hilarious . Fed cant sing to save his life ....but that was really fun .
ive got to say i like the idea of the article .... fun article by the 3 of you .
C'MON !!
fedexfan , 9/23/09 5:37 PM
ZOMG!!!11!!! My vote is for ... ADAM!!!!1111!!!!!
SePlaid, out.
SenorPlaid , 9/23/09 5:38 PM
LOL... Both are the worst singers of all time.... LOL
torres9 , 9/23/09 6:15 PM
Fed will win this because Anna Wintour and Lindsey Vonn will splash millions on voting to make sure Fed wins.. :D
torres9 , 9/23/09 6:20 PM
hahaha... should have used this one of fed:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozPDe3_eVgw
classic
rafa for me though. simply because he was clever enough to let someone else do the singing whilst he "danced" and looked pretty :P
Sib69 , 9/23/09 6:29 PM
Best part of this blog is the "Tennis is having... well... let's call it a quiet week."
RickyDimon , 9/23/09 6:46 PM
hehe, FANTASTIC blog Cheryl and gang. I think it's great! Rafa and Roger are BY FAR the best rivalry of all time! Who else could have a Tennis Idol showdown?
I vote for....Rafa! I know that we're not supposed to SQUEE and say how adorably cute he is, but...HE IS! The way he is dancing/singing, he's like a child trying to be sexy. I love the "Buuuh-eyee" in the end. He's being so flirty there. Plus, the jumping up and down move while spinning around has become my favorite dance move to use! It's so carefree and I'm-having-fun-and-don't-care-that-I-look-like-a-dork way, it's great. :D And don't get me started on his hair and that pink shirt...How can one person posses so much?! *siiiiigh* His singing is awful, the dance is horrific, but HE doesn't think so and that's what makes it great! Confidence and swagger is everything. *listens again* Or not. So adorkable! <3
As for Roger, he's fantastically awful too! I love how eager he is in the video. He's so enthusiastic and sure of himself I don't have the heart to critique. A+ for effort. Plus, his voice is shockingly deep here. I think it's his German voice? It's just terrible. It's so funny how Stanlislas looks like he's so over it, maybe Roger kept him up all night as he was rehearsing his solo in front of the mirror? I love it!
Great stuff! I loved your comments on the clips. Ricky Dimon, I see you've taken the role of Simon Cowell? :P
Kelli, I agree, if Rafa made a CD I'd buy it!.....then I'd lock it in my sock drawer...WHAT? It's to keep it safe! XD
Cheryl Murray: you just rock. Big Bird..hahhaha, pack mule and Sherpa ..hehehe, genius!
They are both so terrible it's great!
SenorPlaid: I agree! I still cannot BELIEVE Adam Lambert didn't win! *sniff*
Hey, aren't Murray and Djokovic supposed to be featured on Bryan Bros. new CD? Don't count them out, we still have more Tennis Idol contenders to come! :))
MiniArbre , 9/23/09 6:57 PM
nole isn't actually THAT bad:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAt0O-RkRwk
ok, maybe i lied...
Sib69 , 9/23/09 7:03 PM
LOL Sib69!
I'm speechless! He gets A+ for singing (I use that world VERY loosely) all the words. It's hysterical how after all of that..ahem..singing, he quiets down and looks as if he's going to start dancing in the end :D .
Just horrific! But he demonstrated the (agony?pain?suffering?) of the song quiet nicely me thinks. XD
MiniArbre , 9/23/09 7:08 PM
Ricky Dimon, I just re-read the comments on the videos (you can't blame me for being disoriented after listening to the two of them, and watching Rafa :P).
I nearly chocked laughing when I read "He should stick to the fist pumps; in fact, one or two of those would have added a nice, vintage touch to this otherwise abominable display."
I got a vivid picture of Rafa fist pumping while he offers his rendition of La Bamba! LOL! You're so ridiculous Ricky! ROFLOL! :D :D You made my day! And I agree, the entrance was pure gold. Flove how he almost knocks the guy unconscious with the door and doesn't even realize it! Hahaha!
MiniArbre , 9/23/09 7:21 PM
MiniArbre - correct! (re: your Simon comment)
and Djokovic would have won easily. That's why I didn't suggest we include him.
RickyDimon , 9/23/09 7:23 PM
erm, I apologize for the double post.
Oh, is it triple post now? Do'h! Sorry *sheepish grin* .
MiniArbre , 9/23/09 7:23 PM
LOL, Ricky, your sarcasm is just too much. My sides hurt...XD
Ow! My spleen! ROFLOL!
MiniArbre , 9/23/09 7:25 PM

this is fun
Sib69 , 9/23/09 7:37 PM
This is what Rafa said happened:
Nadal: "I say to him, 'look, the ball is out', and he say 'I know'.
Even Youzhny agreed the ball was out.
"It looked like it was out," said Youzhny. "I saw the mark, but I just took the challenge because it was a very important point. When it showed it was good I was a little bit shocked."
I have watched this video many times, and I still haven't heard the swear word, in spanish or english.
carrie , 9/23/09 7:37 PM
Sib69! FAULT! DOUBLE FAULT! FOOT FAULT! DEFAULT!
*covers eyes* That was absolutely AWFUL! Thanks a lot! Now I will not be able to recover! *rolls over in fits of laughter while crying simultaneously* I swear Sib69, if I could reach through my computer...!
YOU COULD OF AT LEAST GIVEN ME A WARNING!
I really don't know whether to laugh or cry at that...I feel a little queasy...'scuse me..
UGH!..AAHH!..Goodness me!..help..
MiniArbre , 9/23/09 7:48 PM
I give Roger the edge on the vocals, even though he did mess up one note at the start and he was helped along by the audience, plus the fact that he was singing in jubilation which would have helped his performance. But fair is fair, he was in tune most of the time.
For star quality and the X-Factor my vote definitely goes to Rafa. He already has the rock star looks and I can see his posters covering the walls of many a teenage girl's bedroom.
carrie , 9/23/09 7:49 PM
Sorry, I've got a rogue post here, was meant for another thread.
carrie , 9/23/09 7:52 PM
Aww, Carrie! Something tells me Rafa's posters will be on more walls than just TEENAGE girls ;D .
Heheh, agree on the X-Factor comment, he's just accidentally awesome :)) .
As for Rogelio, flove the random "We love cAaaaake! Very mUuuch!" line. LOL! :D
MiniArbre , 9/23/09 7:56 PM
MiniArbre, Lol!
carrie , 9/23/09 8:04 PM
hahahaha!!! sorry MiniArbre. i should probably have warned you, but didn't think it would have the same impact if you knew what was coming :P
this should be done all the time. have about 10 tennis players singing, and one gets voted out every week til we have a winner. would be awesome
Sib69 , 9/23/09 8:08 PM
These two singers have totally different markets, Roger appeals more to blokes, whilst Rafa is more a girl's favourite. Men don't like pretty men, Roger is a man's man, but Rafa, inspite of the biceps, is definitely not a bloke's cuppa. So whilst Rafa will be chased by screaming teeny boppers, Roger's fans will not be so in your face, but they will both shift their records.
carrie , 9/23/09 8:10 PM
i love the fact you referred to them as "these 2 singers" carrie. i actually want them to release songs now to see if you're right that they will both be successful
Sib69 , 9/23/09 8:15 PM
carrie - you are making general assessments! We need to stick to analyzing these specific performances of "these 2 singers"!!!!
RickyDimon , 9/23/09 8:19 PM
Ricky,
As far as the vocals are concerned, there are toning machines to help with the voice, and these are videos, not CDs, so it's impossible not to take appearance into account. It's all part of the package.
carrie , 9/23/09 8:34 PM
actually, i think in the long run, rafa would be more successful. purely because he is clearly clever enough to let someone else do the singing
Sib69 , 9/23/09 8:37 PM
fedex fan, indeed See you SOON! On the MOON! was a stroke of brilliance, but I still liked "Oh Yeah! I like it! Very, Very Much" better.
Carrie, you can't vote for both. :(
I think Rafa is winning right now.....
cherylmurray , 9/23/09 9:43 PM
cheryl,
In that case no prizes for guessing who gets my vote - Rafa!
carrie , 9/23/09 9:59 PM
I love Rafa, but he is no singer. It's hard to tell which is Rafa and which is Richie Valens. I don't think Rafa can carry a tune, but he is so charismatic and charming. I love to see him having fun and being silly. Roger was hilarious, but also cannot carry a note to save his life. But again for me, it was just the idea of seeing him just loosening up and having a good time.
I have to pick Rafa for sheer presence and charisma. I could never vote against him.
Nativenewyorker , 9/23/09 10:19 PM
Roger is better by far...but maybe Rafa was shy? I think Rafa singing an English song would have been wayyy funnier!
Does Blandy sing?
stu , 9/23/09 10:30 PM

fedexfan , 9/23/09 10:52 PM
malt, don't stuff the ballot box with a million votes, you are only entitled to one.
carrie , 9/23/09 10:52 PM
malt, as long as it's not a Roger/Rafa match, that will simply not be funny.
carrie , 9/23/09 11:00 PM
stu, you have to vote.
carrie , 9/23/09 11:06 PM
I did vote! For Roger..Sorry carrie, if this was about anything other than their singing you know Rafa would get my vote :)
stu , 9/23/09 11:18 PM
"Does Blandy sing?"
yes, his favorite is "god save the queen" :)
posmatrac , 9/23/09 11:56 PM
Hah, that would be hilarious!
stu , 9/24/09 4:50 AM
I'll bet he DOESN'T sing. he doesn't seem like the type that would be comfortable "embarrassing" himself.
cherylmurray , 9/24/09 5:01 AM
true, but i didn't think Roger seemed like that type either until Ricky posted the video!
stu , 9/24/09 5:17 AM
Ah Cheryl, I think Murray is misunderstood.
He's one of those players I root for one point, then root against the next.
I have NO IDEA why I do this, but there is just something about him that makes me..ARGH!
It's funny because I used to (like?) Murray, until one day, I inadvertently converted my baby brother into a Murray fan and he became more of a Murray fan than a Rafa fan (gasp! I KNOW!). I couldn't believe what I had done! I quickly tried to reverse the effects. "It's okay," I told myself, "it's only a phase. He'll soon see Murray's moping and loping around and switch right back to the pure awesomness that is Rafa's fist pumps and Vamos!"
HA! Yeah RIGHT! Months later and I still have to endure his "Yay! Go Murray" during matches. I can't explain why, but as soon as I realized that he was a...gulp...FAN of Murray's, I turned against Andy completely. Even though my baby bro still loves Rafa, he will actually root for Murray OVER Rafa if and when they meet! (hangs head in shame) I don't know what I did! I created a monster! Do you know how ANNOYING it is to watch a match with someone who openly ROOTS for Murray?! Do you?!
After weeks of mulling this over, and resisting the urge to threaten him with lack of sweets and video games (bodily harm briefly crossed my mind. WHAT? I said briefly!), I decided that it would be best to allow him to just...sigh..BE a Murray fan. I believe in my brother. I just KNOW that one day he will see the light. Sometimes I think he roots for him just to get on my nerves. But, what are you going to do? Everyone has their...favorites...I guess.
My relationship with Murray now? I like the guy and I hate him (I use the word 'hate' loosely here. Or do I? See what I mean?!). I can't think of another player who I treat like this, maybe Marat (for good reason, he has resorted to completely and mercilessly TORTURING his fans this season!).
Anyway, I think that Murray is shy..in his own unappealing way that an be very sweet if you are understanding and very patient. Plus, I think the fact that he seems to "open up" when he's with Rafa is very special. Like the weird puppy who bites everyone save for the one person who has a special connection to it and understands it. That fact and his open respect for Rafa keeps me liking the guy long enough to not like him. If that makes any sense. Plus he's an Aries I believe? They are usually cool people.
*shrug shrug* I think that deep down (and I mean DEEP down) he is a goof ball at heart. Now, if only he could muster the energy to let it out. I mean really! I cannot understand how someone could looks so sleepy and lackluster while playing tennis! Should it be considered a talent maybe? Like Rafa's left eyebrow?
He's an acquired taste, that Murray is...much like bagpipes and yodeling.
MiniArbre , 9/24/09 6:07 AM
oh yes, Murray does
in fact he is a recording artist. Not kidding.
RickyDimon , 9/24/09 6:08 AM
yes Ricky. but so is Nole. and a better one at that :P
stu , 9/24/09 6:45 AM
Miniarbre,
It's interesting to read your very entertaining comments on Murray. I have never been able to enjoy watching him play. To me it seems like Murray has always gotten up on the wrong side of the bed. He seems cranky, out of sorts, so unhappy out there on the court. I just dislike his personality. Now I don't know him off court, so he could be hiding an entirely different side of himself, as you implied. But from what I have seen he just doesn't seem to be having a good time.
The one thing that really unnerved me was his habit of hitting his knuckles on his racket strings. He was doing it when he played Fed in the Cincy final. They just had to show a closeup of his bleeding knuckles before the trainer came out to clean up the mess. I am really squeamish to begin with, but that sight just really made me nauseous. Murray needs to channel his nervous energy in a different way. Self-mutilation just doesn't work for me. Also, he could really hurt his hand and there goes the tennis.
I do sense that he likes Rafa and that is always a plus as far as I am concerned.
Nativenewyorker , 9/24/09 6:53 AM
muzz has said more than once to the press that he likes and respects rafa the most on the tour - that is definitely a big plus for me too. i don't have anything against muzz, would like to see him win a slam but he needs to get a few things in order. more recently, it was heartening to read gasquet publicly show his gratitude to rafa for rafa's support during the ugly drug suspension time. gasquet said if rafa ever needed him, he would do anything to repay the support. that was really nice. these guys are so young and i'm sure such vocal support from a colleague means a lot.
homos , 9/24/09 12:31 PM
Here is short studio clip of Nole rapping for Bryan bros:

I think I'm the only one who doesn't think maxi is malty. It's just a coincidence that maxi came just as malty left, and then left just as malti came back. I'm sure maxi is a bloke, and I know malty is a girl. Also maxi says he is partially deaf and teaches deaf children, everyone knows that is not malty.
maxi probably got frustrated with people not buying his plea for moderation, meaning always praise Fed and never say a word against him. I'm sure he's out there searching for a site full of adoring Fed fans and nothing else.
carrie , 9/25/09 3:44 PM
He(maxi) is at tennis X:)
and let Malt use all the dots that she wants:)
alik , 9/25/09 8:55 PM
maxi is over at Tennis X:)
and leave Malt alone about all of her dots:)
alik , 9/25/09 8:58 PM
Nothing....hi? .....i really dont know why actually.............though i have seen 'deepz' write in the same way...(i p-r-o-m-i-s-e you i am NOT deepz either).......why do you call yourself Nothing?
actually i dont know about the dots....i think it is a nervous tick!!! my fingers do a lot of twitching.....its just my style..i havent really thought about it...it just kind of comes naturally....does it annoy you? if so....what can i do?
carrie....have read a few of maxi's posts (not all)....and i did find another poster - my gorgeous friend zoey - who initially said 'no way is maxi....malty....)...then she changed her mind......oh well.....
and i also notice that maxi (though it could have been max), came over to TT EIGHT DAYS after I left, and there were some posters who said that he/she joined 2 days after i had gone - so again - there is a disparity............but Jezzzz...this is friday night and my brain is not in gear..................and carrie....i never thought in a million years that you would stick up for me.......but in a sort of weird way...i want to say thanks.......i couldnt be replaced...eh carrie? and even though you and i have had our moments.......i actually missed your complaining, whinging, repetitive style carrie......you got under my skin....and left a mark!
Alik....so you like my dots! yowzaaaa baby! thank you......
Another vote for federer!!!!!!!! gorgeous boy!!
okay....so fan4tennis....get your arse back on this site now!!!!!! grandchild or no grandchild.........you have friends/adversaries who want to be entertained with rampaging nonsense! (carrie cant do that on her own!!!).......
c'mon!
malteser , 9/25/09 9:49 PM
Malt, i left you a post on the federer skips asian tourny thread.
voting again for feddy cos of his outstanding lack of inhibition!
f4t will be back , i think. but when those of your own 'camp' shall we say turn on you , it is worst hurt. she was being fair about federer which had to be tough for her to do, as you would know, knowing her, malt.
zoey234 , 9/25/09 11:13 PM
yeah zoey honey....i wasnt sure what was going on there.......but when fan4tennis reads this.....i think the lady got a bit softer in her 'old age' (**smiling**)......she seems a little more gentle...from rottweiler to doberman with fangs...... somehow....but still with that wiley streak.......i got the impression that she was trying to be more objective...that was all.....nothing wrong with that.......but still always came across as a passionate rafa fan to me.................i would always think of her as a passionate rafa fan.....so i dont really know what all the fuss was about???????
and boy....did me and fan4tennis have some howlers! Phew......eeeee.......boy....oh boy.......thats why she gonna read this......hop on that broomstick....and witchy woo back here.....P-R-O-N-T-O............
zoey babe....have posted the article for you.....will be off to boooo zooooooss soon and will catch you tomorrow....
mwah....
okay....
sky...???? get your arse over here as well!!!!!
c'mon!
malteser , 9/25/09 11:30 PM
oh and malt, i though deepz might, and i say only maybe coulda been agf....but it took only reading a couple more posts to realize my error. anyways deepz, if you are reading, your rafa camp needs you. i just miss the good ol' days with agf. really malt, i get accused of not tolerating difference in opinion but that is not the case at all! quite the opposite, in fact. i can always go to bleacher or gototennis for calm!
sleep well malty doll and i am out to dinner now too. mwah! so happy you are back!
zoey234 , 9/25/09 11:56 PM
Hi Malty, Nothing is just a fancy name, I find those dots distracting while reading your post, make me skip the post every time but if you love them, keep using them..
Nothing , 9/26/09 2:10 AM
Nothing...i'll try to hold back...sometimes i get a bit too excited and thats when the dots skid off the page...is this better? (its early morning here you see...i get more excitable as the day wears on...but my meds are handy....!!and you are missing out on some great conversation Nothing, if you skip my posts...?! how could you!!!
zoey...agf/deepz? I never felt that was him somehow...i read deepz and felt a bit of deja vu in places...i thought...'this guy...wel....is me?!!!)...then i thought Agf was smartcuty?...what do you think?..anyway..have some research to do now..so catch you later...
malteser , 9/26/09 9:15 AM
malt, almost midnight your time....you probably snooozing.
about smartcuty? that is one funny poster...but you know my humor....i never thought agf when reading smartcuty. i was however coming up with some maybe/ could be's but i give up. never imagined phoenix was danny....lol....good to know.
nitey nite.....i leave on bizness manana...
voting again for the fed for being able and unafraid to improvise
zoey234 , 9/26/09 11:47 PM
no....am up zoey...posted on other thread...glad i caught you tonight.....smartcuty...ummmh....reckon its agf......used to capitalise on all his words though...may be he changed that for a reason....who knows.....?bad language though from them which i dont like at all......yeah...phoenix was very open about being danny...miss the name....danny though....
take care zoey honey.....xx now off to bed...xxx
malteser , 9/27/09 12:40 AM
I had already seen the Fed one, which at first, I was like wow, just wow (sound familiar?), but in hindsight, I thought it was cute. He was excited to have kept his country in World Group and wanted the world to know. High marks from a Fed fan :).
Now, the Rafa one just had me smiling.
Not original, but there it is...
Rafterfan , 9/27/09 1:58 AM
so rafterfan....another vote for federer...yes? whoop! whoop!
zoey....you DO tolerate opinions...dont worry about that.......hard lessons to learn...but we both paid the price.....am just glad your here......was very hard when you had gone.....and then i went shortly after!!! but a lot of my posts then had messages to you in case you were reading.....i dont know whether you got any of them......?????
dont worry about roger's back though zo.....he'll be absolutely fine with the right amount of rest.............catch you later....will stay up longer to see if i can catch you.....
rafterfan...are you from US? where are you from?
malteser , 9/27/09 10:06 AM
One for Rafa - he can get away with anything and has that pop/rock star vibe going for him.
Adri , 9/27/09 11:17 AM
My vote goes for Rafa, I think he brings in more to the court than anybody else
Nothing , 9/27/09 12:25 PM
vamos rafa.......
ull always be my idol
vrael , 9/27/09 4:21 PM
I think Fed will win Tennis Idol because people get bored with good-looking hunks after the 1st few rounds.
Look at the winners of American Idols.
torres9 , 9/27/09 11:05 PM
torres...what are you like?!!!
Federer IS a good looking hunk.....he's gorgeous!
another vote for federer, cheryl!!!! (x) a gazillion.
malteser , 9/28/09 12:06 AM
malty, Fed is good looking but not a the boyband type like Nadal. he's more like the George-Clooney type of goodness.
I'm not gay lol
torres9 , 9/28/09 4:31 AM
can i vote again???
rafa rafa rafa rafa rafa rafa rafa!!!
VAMOS!!!
vrael , 9/28/09 6:49 AM
If we have more than one vote, then limitless, ad infinitum votes go to the man with the X-Factor - Rafa.
VAMOS RAFA!
carrie , 9/28/09 10:57 AM
woof...woof....for fed!
malteser , 9/28/09 2:51 PM

malteser , 9/28/09 11:25 PM
100000000000000000000 votes for the Fed
torres9 , 9/29/09 12:02 AM
Well is good to be in this first edition of Tennis idol, and let me begin by saying, I feel ya dawgs... things are slow right now... just waiting for the "one night in Bangkok" jokes to start popping out.
Meantimes, this is as good a contest as it gets another chapter in the rivalry for the ages... let me place my vote in the style of those ABC TV featurettes we often see at the grand slams...
...(cue in dramatic music)... "Like two forces of nature, destined to meet once again. One, the man many call the greatest of all time. The other, his greatest nemesis. When it all began, we speculated... maybe a new face will make it to the top this time but... we should've known better. It's still a two-man game. And there they stoood, in front of millions, providing unforgetable performances: The Swiss maestro hitting the lows, while the muscled Majorcan screeched the highs. But in the end there could only be one man standing, and that man was...
(more dramatic music)
none other than Rafa Nadal...
From TTalk, we say, until we meet again in this duel of titans.
Bravo!"
Fade to sunset.
END.
grafight , 9/29/09 12:58 AM
very good , grafight. like your style. but get real my friend, that was just a 'canned' closet performance and not a good one from rafa. he could do better, i imagine.
winner has to be fed for leaving all inhibitions elsewhere and belting his heart out for his fans!!
hey malt- just watched some u tube and was laughing hard at a couple remix's of fed singing. there are a bunch of remix's now but two were good, imo. love to know what you think:
1) roger federer "we are swiss" music -remix ( by shraes )
this one features stan tipping the alcohol.....lol
2) roger federer sings...!!! remix (by the swiss )
this one is long...can you stand it ?? : ) hope you enjoy
zoey234 , 9/29/09 3:17 AM
zoey babe....what's the link?? and will go find...tho' will try google later.....hope you are good honey.....
grafight.....'last man standing'.....it's the fed! it's the fed!............... (cue dramatic music!).
malteser , 9/29/09 7:36 AM
When the tennis idols released their 2008 singles at RG, Roger was No8 in the charts and Rafa came in at No 2 and was only tipped to the top by Novak who stripped to the waist to clinch No 1. Go to the RG top ten link shown above and check it out. AM had not been signed by any record company at that point.
Rafa is building on that success to increase his sales with his re-release of La Bamba which has now been remastered to clinch him more votes than Roger with his second release of ??????? chanting? Not quite hip hop music, more rabble rousing.
Another vote for Rafa.
carrie , 9/29/09 8:40 AM
another vote for rafa here
Sib69 , 9/29/09 7:17 PM
Roger for sure
Nilhenwen , 9/29/09 7:23 PM
My vote is always for Rafa!! Loved the movie "La Bamba" itself so the fact he did that song and looked so dang good doing it gets my vote!!!
fan4tennis , 9/29/09 9:41 PM
sorry malt...was dead tired and lazy. 3 full minutes of federer singing remixed with percussion and bass, brace yourself. first one is by, This Swiss:roger federer sings...!!! remix
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umbd-FOOE60
the one with a better mix, not quite as clear tho fun cos it shows stan in frat boy mode. by shraes: roger federer "we are swiss" music-remix
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWyAtanpLiw&feature=relate d
zoey234 , 9/30/09 2:46 AM
Cheryl, who is the chart topper so far, guess Rafa has clinched it.
carrie , 9/30/09 10:33 AM
As my boss would say, "there is no winner." IMO Roger wasn't quite as awful as Rafa, so I'm (reluctantly) voting for RF. But I agree with Ricky, please stick to tennis, boys. Marat's caused me a lot of stress in the past 9 years, but at least he's never inflicted his singing on me. Of course, he might be able to sing...but I doubt it. Good looks, talent, charisma AND singing ability would be too much to ask, LOL.
I was going to say that at least Rafa looked pretty when he was performing his song, but unfortunately his dancing cancelled out his hotness as far as I'm concerned. Roger deserves credit for performing his effort with such panache, though his rendition of "Simply the Best" last year was even more entertaining.
tennisfan76 , 9/30/09 12:22 PM
vamos rafael............vamos!!!!
vrael , 9/30/09 3:15 PM
Seeing that video of NADAL god the kid has charisma and personality and the shaking of the hips *sigh* he can movie better than most guys i must say . I didnt think i could love nadal any more than i do now but the impossible like the credit crunch has happened.
NADAL all the way based on the criteria's i focused on...voice pahhhh...that means nothing when you can shake your hips like that. (and the lean in at the end...*breathe* that was priceless but i i shant continue, too much, too too much. You must understand this is the first i have seen of this video lol).
TopDog , 10/1/09 4:53 AM

rafa's fit for beijing..........finally some good news!!!!
vrael , 10/1/09 8:46 AM
I haven't seen those vids for a long time how fun~ Rafa wins over Fed...I think it's cool that they were both willing to do it.
Vamos Rafa!
Holly , 10/6/09 12:26 AM
It was amusing to see Federer letting his hair down and making a complete fool of himself in a good cause. All credit to him for that but OMG that voice.
Not a lot to choose between them when it comes to singing but Rafa wins by a narrow margin. His performance gets my vote.
ed251137 , 10/6/09 7:46 AM
If you've seen this before, I apologise:
Roger Federer to get hometown naming venue honor
BASEL, Switzerland ? Roger Federer?s birthplace will rename its international tennis venue for its most famous sporting son.
Basel sports director Peter Howald said on Monday that St. Jakobshalle will be called Roger Federer Arena following a planned renovation.
Howald said the city had discussed ways of honoring the new French Open champion, who completed a career Grand Slam and tied Pete Sampras? record of 14 major singles titles with his victory Sunday at Roland Garros.
Federer is a three-time defending champion of the Swiss Indoors tournament at St. Jakobshalle. He is scheduled to defend his title Nov. 2-8.
carrie , 10/6/09 5:03 PM
carrie..what is it with you?........... why exactly have you posted this? I dont understand A-T...A-L-L.....where you are coming from.... On the one hand you are completely devoid of recognising federer's achievements as a player, a sports person, a media icon, almost scathing in your analysis of him..........and then you post this....you dont fool me.....there is absolutely no point in you trying to remotely be c-o-m-p-l-i-m-e-n-t-a-r-y about federer....because the federer fans already know that you must have been bored to death in order to post this....why dont you stick to being utterly over the top with rafa and leave federer alone....you mean anything n-i-c-e that you say about him...it's so obvious....
Regarding your comment on Rafael Nadal of Spain and Ana Ivanovic of Serbia.........who have been voted Ambassadors of the Year for the 2008 tennis season by the ITWA membership, an honor designed to recognize 'consistent openness and cooperation' with the world media....I'm not sure whether you said it was for 2008 because the 2009 season isnt over yet? PLUS the ITWA is a board of 'select' journalists - 9 - in fact who travel around the globe.....I dont think this includes the whole world...do you?
Federer gets another vote from me......
malteser , 10/7/09 4:05 PM
lol...malt! read carrie's post here yesterday and wondered, what the....?
just had to laugh, cos i imagine she enjoys messing with fedfan's heads...lol.....
more votes for feddy but not really wanting to hear the vid again!!
zoey234 , 10/7/09 5:21 PM
it's called being two faced zoey...simple as that....that's what we have to do now...laugh at people who seem to be confused.....fft is being far too quiet for my liking.....what bugs me is that carrie discusses fft......... and what she says about federer, then does an 'about turn' herself....how hypocritical can one person be..???? and then on another thread....welcoming a new poster from BBC606...and say 'look out for torres?'....yet if this person were E-V-E-R to disagree with her.....i would warn her to watch her back.....carrie is NO FRIEND as fft found out............... fft will hopefully read this....and realise that carrie is just losing the plot....
have a great day zoey...off to bed now....ignore vamosrafa as well.....i recall you had a 'to do' with him/her a while back...so best to ignore them....
malteser , 10/7/09 9:51 PM
don't really want to interfere but in carrie's defense, she was just pasting an article. what's everyone getting so uptight about? its not like she said anything complimentary about him...
stu , 10/8/09 4:35 AM
This is not the first time I have been insulted for posting positive articles about Federer, I was once attacked because there was no need to post it because 'everyone' had already seen it. I had no idea a stadium had been named after Federer and genuinely thought it would be of interest to post it here, even though I realised it happened just after the FO, I think, but no one here had ever mentioned it, and I have not seen it mentioned on any other forum.
I'm not going to engage in a slanging match with people who come on here to have a fight, so I planned to ignore the tirade, but I think I ought to make it clear that as stu says, it was merely posting an article of interest for people who were unaware of it like I was.
It would take a tsunami for me to be or even pretend to be a Federer fan, I have never been and never will be, and this was long before Rafa ever hit a pro ball in ernest.
VAMOS RAFA!
carrie , 10/8/09 8:35 AM
this being the case carrie....stop PRETENDING that you are even remotely interested in what federer gets up to....to even post something about a person who you will 'never be (present) ...or will be' (future) a federer fan...makes no sense at all.....to continue this pretence shows your duplicity....as a federer fan....along with zoey who also picked up on your 'laughable' pretence...just carry on supporting rafa and be true to him......rather than pretending and apologising for an article that you have no interest in......may be your dont see that side of your nature.....i dont particularly care....it is just highly suspect that you scald and deny fft's positive remarks and castigate her and yet you have done the same.....
I miss fft carrie....it is a huge shame what you did and said to her....she seems more reticent now coming on this forum....i checked the rules very carefully.....in terms of what you say/etc....as you know....and there is cyber bullying to consider in your case....you bullied fft with all your nasty posts towards her.....and now she has gone quiet because of that mean streak of yours.....i sincerely hope...she gets herself up and running again on all engines and gives you a run for your money.....you turned your back on fft...there is no two ways about it...it will be like me turning my back on zoey, sky or torres..and i would n-e-v-e-r do that.....you can live with it....that's your problem.....but you become more transparent as the days move on....with your mean streak.....
stu.....this isn't just about the above post.....if you read the dialogue between carrie and fft.....and all the nasty remarks that carrie has said about a woman that used to support her and vice versa....sometimes against me,zoey,sky....and others.......and then she posts this article about federer......she is two faced.....whilst posting positive things about federer is to be applauded....of course.....carrie cannot make up her mind...she likes to keep one foot in the federer camp......and then castigates fft for similar dealings.....so you need to be reading that before you judge her in the positive way that you have.....zoey saw through it, as did i.....
VAMOS! Federer! Allez!
malteser , 10/8/09 10:39 AM
As a fan of Rafa, I would rather chew a live wasp than diss Rafa to defend Federer in order to be liked by the High Priestess of the Federer Fan Club. malteser pounces on anyone who does not totally defer to Federer and then denegrates me for standing up for Rafa. Can anyone imagine how malteser would react if torres was to implicate Federer in order to defend Rafa? Why does malteser miss f4t, because she syas what she wants to hear, and malteser, you can go on hating me all you like, I will not turn on Rafa to please you.
What is this dubious honour of being liked by malteser? What does it matter to anyone on this forum what malteser thinks of them? Why am I the worst poster here - because I constantly look out for Rafa, and I do not defer to Federer worshippers and I freely express my opinions.
I wondered how long it would be before malteser resorts to type, interefering on other people's conflicts, dictating who should and should not be liked, and generally going around the forum like a bully in the playground, inciting fights where they don't exist, and turning on people who don't toe the line - her line.
malteser already has a previous stint in the sin bin, and now that the true malteser is coming out, it won't be long before she is back there again. This forum was far more sane without you malteser, and if you are ever banned again, I hope it's for good.
VAMOS RAFA!
carrie , 10/9/09 10:13 AM
yeah carrie...and let me tell you something.....i learnt my lesson....i was unlucky as you know as the argument was initially started by Gordana...and lets face it oh holier than thou....you have more than made up for my absence...and for zoey's....your behaviour towards fft was absolutely disgusting....you dont support rafa carrie....you bang your goddamn drum in the jungle of noise and berate...yes berate anyone....who dares to argue with you....so take your own high priestess title and look at yourself in the mirror bfore you judge others.....your posts to fft....constitute bullying...i sincerely hope that the administrator sees them...has a word with you and that you get what you deserve carrie....fft did NOT deserve that....so pulllezzze stop your twisting....nothing changes with you at all...this is sport...this is tennis......talk tennis...or back away carrie....from the computer.....i hope you are banned for good carrie...you have been lucky so far...i am not the only one who thought you were bullying fft.....and you know it....i was able to read the posts as you know...and some of the comments you made were borderline crazy...you have too much time on your hands...
malteser , 10/9/09 6:52 PM
actually carrie...you have given me food for thought....i thought at one time that i missed you..when i was on my enforced break.....made me think....i could still read what was going on...and kept a list of all the people who missed me....it was really nice to read those posts...kept me going in my hour of need....realised how many lovely people there were........ out there.....and that i never wanted to be in a situation where i would have to miss sky, zoey, torres, senorplaid, gorafago, mdmuch, janhavi, niloofar and a few others...who also said some nice things....except you of course....i didnt expect anything different really.....
then it got me thinking...things were probably sane in your eyes because you were left to rant on your own and some fedfans had more sense than me at that time, and didnt argue with you so much so you just became safe in your own little world.....i've got to be careful with you...i know that....because your mean streak comes out when i'm not looking...so i am going to try and leave you well alone and rely on two of 'your' own.....(von and nativenewyorker)....who work tirelessly to provide interesting...informative chat....on this forum.....and who are huge rafa fans...without the bloodshed that you seek....and yet these two reasonable posters in my eyes have been in trouble on other forums for expressing their views.....you could learn a lot from them carrie.....they have obviously learnt their lesson.....but you wont....its not your style....so you've tried to get rid of fft....(come back...fft! come back!!!!)...and now i am on your hit list.....so i am going to stay the hell away from you...and let others pick up the fight...you take up too much of my energy...and for one of the 'elder' citizens on this forum.....you should be setting the example.....the tone...your posts are so full of anger most of the time.....you are too distracting......just nasty really for no reason......stay away from me carrie......too much to ask i guess.....
malteser , 10/9/09 7:08 PM
That's the best thing I've heard in a long time malteser, you vowing to stay away from me, I sincerely hope you mean it.
VAMOS RAFA!
carrie , 10/9/09 7:29 PM
you are too distracting......just nasty really for no reason......stay away from me carrie......too much to ask i guess.....
malteser , 10/9/09 7:08 PM
stay away from ME carrie...go pick on someone else to have a fight with....that's what you are good at....
malteser , 10/9/09 7:45 PM
Hey! Tennis matches on the MOON!!! Wonderful idea! Imagine the soaring tennis balls in near zero gravity and the athletic skills it will take to leap around and make contact with them!! (as long as there are no lights from fast food restaurants beaming back to earth!( anyway, much as Nadal is a charmer, I can't choose anyone over the Fed. Plus the specatators will all feel younger, weighing less!
Vitality , 11/17/09 12:54 AM
Wonderful idea! Tennis on the MOON! Imagine how dance like Fed will be up there! Imagine the soaring tennis balls and contestants leap floating around in zero gravity!
Vitality , 11/17/09 12:56 AM
Being Spanish myself I'm shocked that so many people find Nadal cute or even good-looking. I mean the guy sure is sweet and is one of the nicest athletes out there and he has a great body, but his face is nothing to rave about. In Spain he's considered quite average looking. I find Fed much more attractive in a subdued kind of way, his hair looks awesome and he has so much style, but he's no hottie either. I think Djokovic is the most naturally good-looking of the Top 5.
Lula76 , 12/22/09 2:31 AM
Lula76, I'm sure many of us will disagree with you about Rafa. I'm not from Spain, so I do not know how the other Spanish guys look like. Of course some of the Spanish players are good looking too! Rafa is quite special, as he grows up, his look does change a bit. I remember seeing his matches in 2005 and he strike me as a tan- skinned teenager with long hair, very much like an American 'red indian' wild boy. He was very much a chubby faced warrior. In 2006, he grew up a bit and some of the chubbiness had gone from his face and I saw his nice sharp features revealing and what a smile and dimple that he had, with a nice set of teeth. He looked a bit Latino in 2006 to 2007 and I must say he looks very beautiful then, in fact he was at his most beautiful then. In 2008, Rafa looked more 'adult' with his body more bulked up and I see a fearsome warrior, again what a smile that he has, who can forget that smile at the Queen's Club during the match with Karlovic; the smile is mesmerising! In 2009, I noticed a 'subdued' version of Rafa, a slimmer and fairer version as well, one that is the least intimidating. Towards the end of the year in 2009, we see a rather pale looking Rafa at the WTF, his fairer skin makes him look rather European to me. His look keeps changing and I must say he looks beautiful all along; he looks rather boyish and comes with a child-like innocent smile, a different type of 'beauty' from the other handsome guys like Safin, Lopez, Verdasco, Haas etc. Maybe that explains why so many of us here view him as good-looking and cute, combining that with his sweet nature and great body and Rafa is certainly not average looking!

Lula76, so many of us can't be wrong. Rafa is sure the most attractive of all the Spanish tennis players, he cuts a dash on the court. But as they say, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder!
carrie , 12/22/09 5:13 PM
I agree luckystar, Rafa looked quite pale at the O2. When I saw him at Wimbledon in 2007, he had a tan. Pale or tanned, Rafa is the real deal.
carrie , 12/22/09 5:38 PM
looks are always about perception.......rafa might be average looking to certain spaniards but the majority find him extremely sexy........VAMOS!!!
vrael , 12/23/09 6:03 AM
Rafa Rafa Rafa wins for me for sure! He has an engaging and refreshing approach to life in tennis - nothing put on and a very 'real' down to earth person. Plus, he is very intense and super sexy!
warmnsunny , 12/24/09 12:30 AM
I must add that there is certain childlike sweetness about Rafa that makes him looks so adorable, one quality that separates him from the rest of the players and the other Spanish guys. Maybe that's also one factor that attracts many people, young or old, to him. Of course the most important thing is Rafa plays tennis like no others, his passion, his intensity, his style and his behaviour, all set him apart from the other players.
luckystar , 12/24/09 8:57 AM
I can not comprehend that someone may even think Rafa is not good looking. He has got the most beautiful smile and his face is so sweet! He is so adorable and so unique. Nobody can match his charisma, his stamina and his tennis style. I do understand, though, when guys complain about his looks saying he is not that handsome, simply because they get jealous and tired of us who adore him, who constantly talk about him and who seem to be crazy about him. And it is not only his looks that makes him distinctive: it is the way he behaves, the way he reacts to fans, the way he plays with his hair and making different faces when concentrates during press conferences...he is simply so cute and must be loved!
natashao , 12/24/09 2:18 PM
Lula76,
haha, one side-effect of your post is that you managed to flush out all nadaltards on TT. funny.
rfzr , 12/25/09 7:21 AM
Lula, are you trying to tell us that you are so inaundated with goodlooking guys in Spain that even Rafa counts as average?????? Surely not. Even amongst the Spanish tennis players, Rafa stands out, he has it all - good looks , charisma, good manners, and an attractive game of tennis that is so addictive, and I never get tired of watching him play, and much, much more. He is adored in England, where people of all ages are captivated by his cuteness!
Vamos Rafa!
carrie , 12/27/09 6:50 PM
if it's the case that there's so many hot guys in spain that rafa is average... then i'm moving to spain! :P
Sib69 , 12/27/09 10:15 PM
what did you guys expect from fed tards?
homos , 12/28/09 3:23 AM
I've been to Spain many times, and if Rafa is an average looking guy in Spain, then the Pope is not a Catholic!
carrie , 12/28/09 3:14 PM
rfzr, I suppose if somebody commented on Fed's look, it will also attract the same kind of reactions from Fed's followers. I think its only natural that comments like these will follow especially its about our favorite player(s), and ain't this thread about tennis idol, so what's wrong with us commenting the way we do??
luckystar , 12/28/09 4:24 PM
luckystar, firstly i'm not a Fed fan at the first place (but respect him and Rafa and other players on many levels). Secondly, there is no reason to jump on everyone who doesn't share the same opinion like you (and few others) on this site, given the fact that you (and few others) already peppered TT with your Rafa idolatry. At the end of the day it is important what you personally think about your fav player, but if you keep going across various threads you put yourself in the 'hardliner' group. Just my personal opinion.
rfzr , 12/28/09 7:09 PM
rfzr, I'm just quoting Fed as an example, because this thread is about Fed and Nadal. I didn't say you are a Fed fan. I'm not jumping at you but you show disrespect for calling Nadal fans Nadaltards! I feel the need to response to your post, that's all. I don't consider myself in the 'hardliner' group, just showing my displeasure when being a Nadal fan is classified as 'Nadaltards'. I think I have the right to feel that way and voice my displeasure!
luckystar , 12/28/09 8:30 PM
rfzr, if anyone had come on here saying they were shocked that people saw something in Federer or Djokovic, and that they thought Nadal had more going for him than those two, I think this thread would have been bombarded with responses from fans of those two players.
I am glad that Nadal fans have not bitten the bait to start giving their opinions on the looks of those two players, they've just simply expressed their support for Rafa in this context. And everyone is free to come on here and idolize their player if they want, if there are more Rafans doing it, then it's probably because he has more fans than the others on TT.
Vamos Rafa.

No vote tally to be had? Surely has to be Federer leading this, no? Ivo Karlovic has to get an honorable mention for his Christmas song medley. Sure, he didn't know a majority of the words, but he wore a nifty little Santa hat.
Kelli , 12/31/09 1:26 AM
Ah...the tally was in the following week's blog entry. Rafa won. Fangirls, you know. :D
cherylmurray , 1/1/10 11:09 PM
Yes Rafa won! I didn't want to spoil Kelli's fun, but confirmation has now come from the horse's mouth.
carrie , 1/2/10 6:25 PM
Pardon me- I saw the garb in that photo and I nearly fainted. No tally though- was it a landslide? The lovely Rafa fangirls.....No other group is more passionate or dedicated. God bless.
Kelli , 1/3/10 1:59 AM
Actually, I don't remember the exact tally (it was a combination of e-mails and votes on here). I think it was something like 40 votes for Rafa and 28 for Roger.
