  • Day 4 - My pre-Federer tour

    2009-04-02 11:13:31
My morning was a comedy of errors. I should admit that I sort of…took the day off. Remember I told you that my iPhone stopped working on Sunday night? Well, I decided to go to the Apple store this morning to have it checked. Since I don’t have a car, I used mass transit. I should also mention that while I was “smart” (you’ll see why I put that in quotes a little later) enough to write the address down, I neglected to actually bring it with me. No matter, because after a mere hour of wandering around aimlessly onbthe streets of Miami, I found it.

I was prepared to plead with them to replace my phone, since I need it to do my job. I pulled my phone out to show the clerk how it wasn’t working, and she took it, pressed the power button and it turned on. I had been pressing that power button for 3 days straight days with NO RESULTS. My theory is that my particular iPhone is an underachiever and had to be shamed into working by all of her iPhone buddies that had yet to be bought. I didn’t share this with the girl at the store, however. After I shouted “IT WOULDN’T TURN ON FOR ME!” she clearly already thought my grip on reality was hanging by a tenuous thread. I’m sure I’m right about my phone though.

That was the good part of my day. When I got back to my hotel, I decided that I would just go for the night session tonight. I’d found a restaurant that I wanted to try that was on the same street as my hotel - I just wasn’t sure how far away it was. Given my morning struggles with the transit system, I figured I’d just walk. Did I mention that it was hot? After about 5 blocks, I got tired, hot and had developed blisters on the soles of each of my feet, one on my left heel and one on my left big toe. So I waited at the next bus stop and when the driver pulled over, I showed him the address of the restaurant and asked if the bus was going there. Miraculously, he said that it was. My luck had changed! And it was only a $2.00 fare. I was still putting my money in the fare collecting machine when the bus stopped and the driver said “Here’s your stop. Guess you could have walked.” I’d stopped walking a half a block before my destination.

I bought a new pair of sandals before I had lunch because of the blisters and I immediately changed shoes. Lunch was decidedly not worth the hassle I put into getting there. I looked around for something else to do, when I saw a sign advertising a 90 minute boat ride for $20.00 to “see the homes of the stars”. Now, understand that I had no real interest in seeing rich peoples’ houses. In fact, I’d rank that activity right up there with getting my eyebrows waxed, but I thought seeing Miami from boat might be nice. To put it in perspective, taking a taxi from the airport costs $35.00. When you look at it that way, it’s a pretty good deal.

It was an educational experience. I learned, for instance, that there is a fake island called Fisher’s Island where lots of rich and famous people have houses including Andre and Steffi, and Boris Becker. Condos there can run many millions of dollars. And frankly, I can see why it’s so appealing. One whole side of the island has a breath-taking view. Of a row of cargo ships. Oh the envy! I also learned that while lots of famous people own houses in Miami, nobody actually lives in them. The only people I saw during the entire tour were 3 kayakers in the bay and I feel pretty confident that they weren’t residents of Gloria Estefan’s or Vanilla Ice’s homes. I didn’t waste my time on board, by the way. I spent much of it affixing bandages to my feet in anticipation of the walk back to my hotel.

The new sandals were great, by the way. All except for the fresh blister they gave me – this time on the top of my foot. I’m writing this from the tournament, where I can finally recover from my day off and enjoy Federer and Roddick.

HAHAHAHAAHAHA
I'm sorry your day off wasn't as perfect as it should have been. Maybe the conclusion of this all is "never take a day off"? Nah... that's saying TOO much.

Glad you could take that boat, though. It must be interesting to see those houses closer, except for the envy part.

Don't worry about the iPhone experience. It's Murphy's law, I swear. Same thing happened to me with my cell phone during a job trip. The damn phone only turned on when I got back home and took it to the store....

Well, as most of the problems of the day were my own fault, I can't complain too much. LOL.

Entertaining read.

My mobile has had the yips too while I was traveling (& then it returned to being perfectly fine). My theory: wide-range changes in humidity & temperature can affect the screen display & other connections in there. An electronic equivalent of a bad cold, maybe.

but then it gets back to work . now , its corrupted for real !!! i need to fix it, although am sure there is no one can fix it here for me :(( . I might buy a new sony ericson one lol.
about sandals, its your fault , sorry to tell you that.
but you are walking for long distance , why not using a Tennis shoes instead?
I know its hot , but from my experience of using a tennis shoe with socks for 8 continuous hours in 45 C and more every day , Thank god I didn't develop blisters , and I can walk freely .
put your feet in Ice or cold water after getting back home :)

Interesting article cheryl. Puts a whole other perspective on things (more personal), and I like that. I do a lot of walking (don't have a car), and the good shoe advice from Noody is "smart" advice for sure. Be good to your feet! You may feel a little hotter, but your feet will feel strong and endure the days work/pleasure/activities whatever you need them for. In short your feet will be happy! Cheers
