  • Top tennis quotes of 2008 - Federer, Nadal and more

    2008-12-17 14:58:16
Each year, the top tennis players (and apparently ATP player council members) supply us with delightful quotes that run the gamut from amusing to delusional to downright dreadful. Here are a few of my personal favorites.

Rafael Nadal has become rather famous for his lost-in-translation quotes. Last year he had a pain in his "faymoose ass", paying homage to his often talked about derriere. Apparently the Spanish heartthrob did not want to disappoint us in 2008. The following exchange took place (as did the faymoose ass incident) during the Australian Open.

Interviewer: How does your body feel compared to last year at the US Open and hardcourts?

Nadal: "My body is perfect, no?" (insert innocent eyelash batting from sweet little Rafa)

The room full of journalists break into titters (one wonders how many women were sitting in that presser)

    Nadal: "Physically speaking. Nothing perfect..."

Sure, Rafa. Way to rub it in Rog...er...well, let's be nice today, shall we?

Novak Djokovic has also become famous - but not for his derriere. He is becoming increasingly well-known for his frequent medical time-outs, a fact which apparently bothers the world number three. The media darling had this to say about the issue in October -

"I don't like how I have got a reputation as a guy who asked for medical timeouts to intimidate opponents. It's not me trying to provoke my opponent. It's me trying to win."

Do tell, Nole. I find myself fascinated with these match-winning medical timeouts. He should teach the other top players how to do that. Those poor fools are still working off the assumption that their tennis is what wins matches.

Roger Federer has had one of his greatest quote years ever, giving us pearls of wisdom for the entire second half of the season. This quote was in response to yet another question posed to Federer on the importance, the exquisite-ness, the grandeur, the majesty and over-all greatness of the Wimbledon final.

"I was aware of how incredible the match was. Unfortunately there had to be a winner. From my point of view many left feeling sorry for me instead of being happy for Rafa. Which hurts."

Yes, Roger. The crowd clearly left with pity in their hearts. You could tell by the way they were screaming and cheering and giving 15 minute long standing ovations. Of course, by crowd he might have meant Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale, who surely left the All England Club not feeling happy for Rafa...

And the "He must have been really REALLY drunk when he said that" award goes to Justin Gimelstob. The newly elected player representative to the ATP council showed his appreciation for his appointment by going on a radio talk show and saying the following about Anna Kournikova prior to a World Team Tennis encounter (Kournikova plays for an opposing team). Please note that the worst of the foul language had to be edited out.

"If she's not crying by the time she walks off that court, then I did not do my job. I'll mock her and make fun of her. I'll just make her know that she's stupid. Hate's a very strong word. I just despise her to the maximum level, right below hate".

Um, dude... you DO realize that you said that in PUBLIC?

And my very favorite quote of all, the cream of the crop, the icing on the cupcake... The following is an exchange between Andy Roddick and a reporter at the US Open. The topic was Novak Djokovic's various injuries. This one needs to be viewed to be appreciated fully.

Can we say the writer of this article is a Nadal lover and hates every other player on the planet? I think so. Way to maintain an unbiased perspective, which completely deteriorates your credibility and perspective.

Cheryl, very amusing, as usual. Keep it up! We love you!

tennisfan2 , 12/18/08 3:59 AM

Cheryl, I believe our friend Gimelstob didn't endear himself to many people at the Masters Cup thank you function in Shanghai.

sukhumvit , 12/18/08 4:59 AM

give federer a break man. that was a really nice thing he said! everything he says get twisted somehow its ridiculous. there was alot of pple feeling sorry for fed (like mcenroe) - obviously u wernt one of them - but he was telling the truth. cut him some slack.

kaitepai , 12/18/08 6:21 AM

Great work as always cheryl, keep it up.

almost everything is a matter of opinion so if you don't like someone's, that person clearly won' like your either so let's get a grip here and stop whining. EVERYTHING he says gets twisted?? really? that could be applied backwards too, surely!

remi , 12/18/08 9:40 AM

The crowd was shouting for Rafa very loudly towards the end so that to me is not a fair observation from Fed. I do not like the comment but have no doubt some in the crowd and elsewhere felt for him since he's such a great player and it was a big loss for him.
can we say that iolife si very rude. there are those who agree with cheryl as you can see. everyone has opinions so you need only state your disagreements. if you wrote an article, would it be completely objective since you're a person with perspectives, feelings and opinions?

homos , 12/18/08 10:40 AM

Nice Cheryl :-) LoL @ Roger's comment

RafaNadalGirl20 , 12/18/08 3:10 PM

lol, awesome. I love andy roddick - he's the sweetest & wittiest boy on the tour!

Roger comes up with quite a few it-can-only-be-Fed quotes, doesn't he? How about the one where he said he doesn't like being introduced as Number Two since it doesn't feel right - he would much rather be called Number One or Grand Slam champion! The best part is that somehow it doesn't sound so ridiculous when spoken by The Man - after all, we are in debt to him for playing tennis that evokes comparisons with a Chopin or a Van Gogh!

anotherfineday , 12/18/08 7:59 PM

iolife, I would love to add a controversial or idiotic quote from Nadal. If you know of one from 2008, by all means post it. He is annoyingly polite in his pressers - it has nothing whatsoever to do with whether or not I like him.

Also, this is a BLOG, not a news article. LOL. The purpose of a blog is to editorialize.

cherylmurray , 12/18/08 9:14 PM

Great Blog Cheryl, he should have really appreciated been called number #2 because there is a big possibility that he'll be introduced as #3 soon ( i would enjoy this a lot more if it were someone other than 'Mr. courageous' taking his place) Roddick lol

mero , 12/19/08 6:27 AM

Thanks for responding Cheryl. I know this is a blog and as such is very opinionated. It really seemed like you were being very harsh on the other players, so I was only expressing my opinion too. Didn't mean to be so harsh on you.

It's true that a lot of what Federer says gets misinterpreted. Let's be real here, the man has accomplished a lot in his career and he has a lot of fans, so of course that means a lot of people were in fact disappointed when he lost - his fans. Let's say half the people there at Wimbledon were his fans, that's a realistic assumption, therefore half the people there were sad that he lost instead of being happy that Nadal won. Is it right for Federer to assume he has a lot of fans, of course it is.

In terms of Novak, he does not need to fake injuries to win matches. He's beaten Federer, Nadal and Murray, so why would he need to fake injuries against players like Robredo? He's No. 3 in the world and the only thing that can get anyone to No. 3 is through their tennis talent, which cannot be faked. Clearly, something must have really been wrong with Novak. Now if he constantly had medical time outs against Nadal, Federer and such top ranked players, then I might agree with you.

Let's not forget what Nadal did to Federer this year in Monte Carlo I believe (it might have been another 2008 clay court event). Remember when Fed was 5-1 up and Nadal called a medical time out. Then as soon as Nadal was back on court, he was running like a rabbit as if he was in no pain at all. Now some could view that as if he called a medical time out to only hinder Federer's concentration - a strategy of some sort. Nadal called medical time outs in the 2007 Wimbledon finals as well. I think it's safe to say that Nadal calls medical time outs quite a bit for his knees on many occasions. So why is that anymore acceptable then what Djokovic does?

At this high level of tennis, players have to right to be confident, they have the right to say confident things and they have the right to do what it takes to win. We can't hold that against them. Think about this, I wonder the things Nadal might say if his English were better. I like Nadal. But guaranteed, if he spoke more English, you'd have some quotes on him - he's human too.

iolife , 12/19/08 9:45 AM

And thanks for your thoughts and perspectives Cheryl. Without them, we'd have nothing to comment on, debate, or read. I like that we can share our opinions and engage in debates freely.

iolife , 12/19/08 9:52 AM

Almost all of what Nadal says in his native dialect or fluent Spanish is translated into English as well in his site so english speakers can read what Rafa says - and Rafa doesn't say the sorts of things that Rog sometimes says. Of course Rafa is human and this isn't to say he's better than Rog. They are just different. Some prefer one, others prefer the other - and we're all entitled to it.

homos , 12/19/08 11:22 AM

thanks cheryl for another hilarious blog...i have been reading on the comments posted in here and i was even more amused by how iolife seems to comprehend things...you know what, the real difference between rafa and roger, that is off court, is that rafa does his spiels not knowing that it has already tickled his listeners, somewhat innocent in the main sense of the word..while roger?serious and serious and serious...those lines of his were mechanisms to defend his ego..please understand..anyways, i do..

slapslip08 , 12/21/08 2:06 PM

I don't know what the motive behind that Federer comment was, but I do know that it sounded...funny. The live crowd was applauding wildly for both men. It seemed pretty clear to me that a vast majority of those people were able to both be happy for Rafa and sad that Roger lost.

cherylmurray , 12/22/08 8:31 PM

Andy Roddick: best. interviewee. ever.

sheila , 12/31/08 12:38 AM

Roddick's interview was absolutely hilarious. My favorite interview of the year, for sure.

"I don't like how I have got a reputation as a guy who asked for medical timeouts to intimidate opponents. It's not me trying to provoke my opponent. It's me trying to win."

Everyone with IQ >= 90 would interpret this statement as "using the official rules of the game" to stay in the match and try to get a positive outcome. Those bellow the 90 value would interpret it differently.

posmatrac , 1/2/09 10:29 AM

I just see it as quite sneaky from Nadal, to keep saying in one breath that Roger is the best, (but guess who keeps beating the best?????? ) I think he does honestly believe that Rogers style and level of game is far superior to his, and Im sure Nadal's body will have given out long before he reaches Rogers age.

Casper , 1/4/09 5:01 AM

LOL...Andy Roddick is hilarious, officially. "SARS...anthrax"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jazi , 1/4/09 10:35 PM

haha, very nice article Cherryl! :)

lolethhh , 1/17/09 3:26 PM

nadal is so funny when he speaks english and generally in press conferenses! his english suck, but he is so adorable.....

ermione , 1/28/09 8:46 PM

There is nothing wrong with getting help when you are cramping up or have a bad fall.
Most players do it. But when Djoko calls for help people start wondering if he's going
to quit again. I think he's allergic to losing.
Great quotes, by the way! About Roger: When he lost he said to Johnny Mac that the
fact that this was one of the greatest finals of all time was no consolation. He was
the one feeling sorry for himself, not happy for Rafa, so he was chastising himself!
About Rafa: It's fun to laugh at his language bloopers, and he doesn't mind. He could
just request a translator every time, but instead tries to communicate, often resulting
on funny serendipitous moments as the one you mention. Everyone who has
had to really learn a second language well can relate.
And Andy of course, is headed for the commentators chair. He's just too funny!

grafight , 2/8/09 8:15 AM

I believe sometimes that Roger has such an inflated ego of himself that it gets in the way of his judgement!!

" From my point of view many left feeling sorry for me instead of being happy for Rafa. Which hurts."

Why must he go and say something like that?!!!!

First of all....if that helps him feel better about his loss...well....thats just too sad.......and secondly....he's lying!!! It does not hurt at all!!!!! The fact that he even said what he said is proof enough!!!!!.....

I really try hard to like Roger but he makes it sooooooooooo difficult sometimes......

........and yes......I am an avid Rafa fan!!!!.......and his cute little accent will get him out of any trouble......
