The first thing I learned is that Monte-Carlo is easily the most beautiful tennis tournament in the world. You just can't beat the Mediterranean Sea for a back drop. I also learned that lunch will run you 22 Euros (which is like $1000.00 American), but for those 22 Euros, you get waiters who serve you in white tuxedos and dishes whose names I'm unsure how to pronounce. Pretty posh digs here at the Monte-Carlo Country Club.
Another thing I found out is that Rafael Nadal is a rock star. Well, tennis' version of one, anyway. The guy was practicing – not playing an actual match...just practicing, and there were people literally hanging from the underside of the bleachers trying to get a peek at him. It just goes to prove that even here in what is nearly France, they actually like him. Thanks to the musings of Guy Forget and his apparent distaste for construction workers in the tennis world, many people get the idea that French people don't like Nadal and his physique. But I'm here to tell you that all of the 11 year old boys (and teenage girls, presumably) in France heartily disagree with Guy.
But the best thing I learned today is that Gustavo Kuerten, bless his sunny soul, is kind enough to sign autographs for children who have no earthly idea who he is, but assume that because he's holding a racket bag, he must be a player. This would only have been speculation on my part, but one of the boys said, in what was surely the loudest whisper ever uttered, "Hey guys....who was THAT?"
It's been a great day over all. And all this without a wink of sleep. Maybe tomorrow, I'll even have a player interview to tell you about. One can hope. Until then, I'm off. Maybe I'll actually sleep tonight. Imagine how coherent my blog will be then!
